Catholic Nun receives Mother Teresa Memorial Award
New Delhi (CBCI News): Sr. Cecilia Rodrigues of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate from Siliguri, West Bengal, is the recipient of the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for the gold medalist in MSW from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi for 2013.
The Mother Teresa Memorial Award is instituted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India in IGNOU through the CBCI Chair. This award is presented to the gold medalist in Master of Social Work (MSW) every year during the convocation. The award consists of Rs.10,000/- and certificate.
The 26th convocation was held at the IGNOU Convention Centre on April 12, 2013. Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, the president of India and visitor to IGNOU, was the chief guest of the function. The guest of honour was Shri. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Government of India. Sr. Rosetta Thannickal, Delegation Superior, Delhi, was present during the programme. The programme was live on Gyanvani FM radio stations, Gyandarshan as well as web cast.
Sr. Cecilia MSI did her B.A. in Social Work from Maristella College, Vijayawada. She belongs to the Siliguri Province of the Nirmala Sisters and is currently working at the Women Development Centre in Kalchini, Diocese of Jalpaiguri.
The social work programmes in IGNOU are being coordinated by Professor Gracious Thomas, Director, School of Social Work. There are over 30,000 students pursuing the social work programmes from various parts of India and about a dozen countries. The CBCI Chair has been running these programmes since 2004.
