Archbishop of Metropolitan Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore

Most Rev. George Antonysamy is the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore and the current Vice President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. Before his leadership in Chennai, he served as a Vatican Diplomat and Apostolic Nuncio to several African nations. He is widely recognized for his extensive experience in international relations and his dedicated focus on the pastoral and social welfare of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore.

George Antonysamy was born on 15 February 1952 in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu. He completed his early schooling in Trichy and later joined St. Augustine’s Minor Seminary for priestly formation.

He pursued higher theological studies in Rome at the Pontifical Urban University, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in Theology.

He was ordained as a Catholic priest on 19 November 1980. After his ordination, he served for one year as an assistant parish priest at the Holy Redeemer’s Minor Basilica, Trichy.
