New Delhi, 6 August 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops'
Conference of India (CBCI) participated in a high-level delegation of Christian
leaders representing various denominations across the country that met the
Hon'ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, on 6 August 2026 to discuss the
proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.<o:p></o:p>

The delegation was led by Shri P. Wilson, Member of
Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chairman of the Joint Action Forum on Minorities
(JAFM). It brought together senior Church leaders and representatives of
Christian organizations from across India to present their concerns regarding
the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.<o:p></o:p>

Representing the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India were Most
Rev. Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Secretary General, CBCI, and Rev. Dr. Mathew

During the meeting, the delegation submitted a detailed
representation requesting the withdrawal of the Foreign Contribution
(Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 in its present form. Alternatively, it
requested that the Bill be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for
comprehensive stakeholder consultation and a detailed examination of its
constitutional, legal, and practical implications. The delegation also urged
the repeal of Section 15 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, so
that no provision permitting the vesting of foreign contributions or charitable
assets survives in any form.<o:p></o:p>

The delegation highlighted that the proposed amendments
would fundamentally alter the existing regulatory framework by introducing
provisions relating to the automatic cessation of registration, the vesting of
charitable assets, Government management of institutions, and the permanent
transfer of assets. It submitted that these provisions would have far-reaching
consequences for educational institutions, hospitals, orphanages, homes for the
elderly, healthcare facilities, and other charitable institutions serving
vulnerable communities across the country.<o:p></o:p>

The delegation further submitted that the proposed
amendments raise important constitutional issues concerning the rights
guaranteed under the Constitution of India. It emphasized that the objectives
of transparency, accountability, and prevention of misuse of foreign
contributions can be effectively achieved under the existing legal framework
without introducing provisions that permit the vesting or takeover of
charitable assets. The delegation also informed the Hon'ble Home Minister that
the concerns expressed in the representation reflect the views of a broad
cross-section of stakeholders across the country.<o:p></o:p>

The Hon'ble Home Minister interacted with the delegation for
more than an hour and heard the grievances relating to the proposed Amendment
Bill as well as the existing Act, particularly the provisions dealing with the
vesting of properties and the management of the activities of charitable
organizations. The Hon'ble Home Minister assured the delegation that he would
look into the grievances raised and take a decision in this regard.<o:p></o:p>

Justice, Peace and Development (JPD) Secretaries' Meeting was held on 5 August
2026 at the Catholic Centre, Bannimantapa, Mysuru, bringing together diocesan
JPD directors and secretaries from across the region to strengthen

mental health challenges affecting children, youth, families, and the elderly,
the Catholic Church in the West Bengal and Sikkim Region has made a landmark
call to establish a Mental Health Ministry in every parish. The appeal emerged
from the First West Bengal &amp; Sikkim Regional Mental Health Conference, held
on 1–2 August 2026 at Jeevandhara, Raiganj, under the theme "Caring
Together, Healing Together."<o:p></o:p>

The conference was organized by the West Bengal Catholic
Health Association (WBCHA) in collaboration with the CBCI Office for Healthcare
and the Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM) India. Bringing together

Chennai, 6 August 2026, CBCI: CBCI's CHARIS India has
invited bishops, priests, religious, families, youth, and all people of
goodwill to participate in the 5th National March for Life, to be held on 8–9
August 2026 at Stella Maris College, Chennai, under the theme "Upholding
the Right to Life and the Dignity and Value of Every Human Life."
Organized by CBCI's CHARIS India and hosted by the Archdiocese of
Madras-Mylapore, the two-day national event seeks to reaffirm the sanctity of
human life from conception to natural death and inspire a culture of
compassion, hope, and solidarity.<o:p></o:p>

The programme will begin on Saturday, 8 August, with the Run
for Life 2026 from 5:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., followed by the Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament, Adoration and Prayer for Pro-Life (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.), the
Pro-Life Exhibition (9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.), and the Jericho Prayer and Final

In a message addressed to participants of the SIGNIS World
Conference being held in Kigali, Rwanda, the Holy Father encouraged
communicators to harness digital technologies responsibly so that communication
platforms become instruments of dialogue, solidarity, and authentic human

New Delhi, 3 August 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops'
Conference of India (CBCI), in collaboration with Caritas India, has launched a
National Humanitarian Appeal calling upon dioceses, religious congregations,
parishes, Catholic educational institutions, and people of goodwill across the
country to extend generous support to communities devastated by the recent
floods in Assam.<o:p></o:p>

The appeal follows exceptionally heavy monsoon rains that
began on 19 July 2026, triggering severe flash floods across Nagaland and Upper
Assam. The floods have claimed lives, displaced thousands of families, and
caused extensive damage to homes, cropland, livestock, roads, bridges, and
other essential infrastructure. Although floodwaters have begun to recede in
some areas, the humanitarian crisis remains severe, with thousands of families
continuing to require urgent assistance.<o:p></o:p>

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority
(ASDMA) update of 31 July 2026, the cumulative flood death toll in Assam has
risen to 80, while more than 2.12 lakh people remain affected. At least 437
villages continue to be inundated, with 75,583 people taking shelter in 112
relief camps and distribution centres. The floods have also damaged over 17,198
hectares of agricultural land, severely affecting livelihoods. The districts of
Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat remain among the worst affected.<o:p></o:p>

The appeal notes that countless families have lost their
homes, food stocks, and means of livelihood, leaving them in urgent need of
safe shelter, food, clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene support,
protection services, and assistance to rebuild their lives.<o:p></o:p>

Responding swiftly to the crisis, Caritas India, the social
and humanitarian arm of the CBCI, has initiated emergency humanitarian
assistance through its diocesan partner, Seva Kendra Dibrugarh, in close
coordination with government authorities, local Church institutions, and the
Assam Inter-Agency Group. The first phase of the response focuses on the
distribution of shelter kits, hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and food
supplies. A comprehensive field assessment will guide the second phase of
interventions, which will focus on relief, recovery, and livelihood restoration
based on the resources mobilized through this National Humanitarian Appeal.<o:p></o:p>

In the appeal, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Poola,
President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, and Most Rev. Dr. Linus
Neli, Chairman of Caritas India, have urged the Church in India to stand in
solidarity with the flood-affected communities by contributing generously to
the CBCI National Humanitarian Appeal.<o:p></o:p>

Caritas India will ensure that all contributions received
through this National Humanitarian Appeal are utilized exclusively for the
Assam Flood Response 2026, in accordance with established humanitarian

CBCI Launches National Humanitarian Appeal for Flood-Affected Communities in Assam

Tiruchirappalli, 1 August 2026, CBCI: Rev. Dr. M.
Christu Rajamony, Secretary of the CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and
Development (JPD), delivered a keynote presentation on "Justice, Peace and
Development (JPD): Corresponding to the Current Indian Situation" during
the Tamil Nadu Social Service Society (TASOSS) Regional General Body Meeting
held at the TASOSS Community Centre, Tiruchirappalli.<o:p></o:p>

The session formed part of the official agenda of the
Regional General Body Meeting and was attended by 27 Directors of the Diocesan
Social Service Societies from across Tamil Nadu.<o:p></o:p>

In his presentation, Fr. Christu Rajamony underscored the
urgent need to establish Peace Clubs at the parish, educational institution,
and community levels as grassroots platforms for nurturing peace,
constitutional values, interreligious harmony, conflict resolution, and
responsible citizenship. He encouraged the participants to integrate peace education
into their diocesan social action programmes and to actively involve youth,
women, and local communities in building a culture of dialogue, reconciliation,

CBCI-OJPD Calls for Grassroots Peace Initiatives and Stronger Advocacy for Constitutional Values in Tamil Nadu

Secunderabad, 30 July 2026, CBCI: The Executive Body
of the Catholic Council of India (CCI) met at the TCBC Secretariat, Jyotirmai
Hall, Secunderabad, for a day of deliberation on the Council's governance,
future programmes, and preparations for its upcoming General Body Meeting.<o:p></o:p>

The meeting commenced with an opening prayer led by Benedict
Mascarenas, followed by the felicitation of His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Poola,
President of the CBCI and the Catholic Council of India, by Vice Presidents Dr.
Antose Antony and P. K. Cherian, Treasurer of the CCI. Rev. Dr. Mathew

new resource titled “Recollecting: Accompanying the Preparation of the Local
Church’s Evaluation Assembly” to assist Bishops, Eparchs and diocesan
synodal teams in preparing for the Local Church Evaluation Assemblies to be
held during the first half of 2027.<o:p></o:p>

The
document, published on 27 July, offers practical guidance to help dioceses and
eparchies reflect on the implementation of the Synod and discern the fruits of
the synodal journey. Rather than prescribing a single model, it provides
flexible guidelines that can be adapted to the pastoral needs of each local
Church.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal
Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, described the evaluation process
as “not a technical exercise, but an experience of gratitude and truth,”
inviting local Churches to recognise how the Holy Spirit has guided their
synodal journey and to discern the path ahead.<o:p></o:p>

The
resource consists of two complementary sections. The first helps local Churches
prepare a narrative report by gathering experiences and testimonies from the
synodal journey and reflecting on the growth in relationships, ecclesial life
and pastoral processes. The second guides the preparation of the Local Church
Evaluation Assembly, convened by the Bishop as a spiritual gathering centred on
prayer, listening, shared reflection and Conversation in the Spirit.<o:p></o:p>

At
the conclusion of the Assembly, each local Church will prepare a narrative
report and a Letter to the Other Churches, sharing its synodal experience,
future commitments and a message of hope. Following the Bishop’s approval, both
documents will be submitted through the national or regional synodal team to

The
local evaluation phase will be followed by assemblies of Bishops’ Conferences

"The apostolic office is not a throne to occupy but a
cup to embrace," Cardinal Poola said, emphasizing that every bishop is

Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) opened in
Jakarta, Indonesia, bringing together more than 120 cardinals, bishops, and
Church leaders from across Asia for a week of prayer, discernment, and
reflection on the future mission of the Church on the continent.<o:p></o:p>Held from 20 to 26 July 2026, the Assembly is centred on the
theme, "The Call to Synodal Conversion and the Mission to Be Bridges and
Bridge-Builders in Asia." Representatives from the FABC's 22 member
Bishops' Conferences and ecclesiastical jurisdictions are participating in the
gathering, which seeks to strengthen synodality, missionary outreach, dialogue,
and reconciliation in Asia's diverse cultural and religious contexts.<o:p></o:p>The Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences, established in
1970 following the meeting of Asian bishops during the visit of St. Paul VI to
Manila, has played a significant role in fostering collaboration among the
local Churches of South, Southeast, East, and Central Asia. Over the decades,
it has promoted evangelisation, interreligious dialogue, theological
reflection, and social engagement throughout the region.<o:p></o:p>Addressing the opening press conference, Cardinal Filipe
Neri Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman and President of the FABC, reflected
on the challenges faced by Christians living as minorities in many parts of
Asia. He said the Church's response to these challenges should not be one of
fear but of building relationships, promoting dialogue, and becoming a bridge
of reconciliation among peoples, cultures, and religions.<o:p></o:p>Echoing this vision, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop
of Caloocan and Vice President of the FABC, said that Christians are called to
build bridges rather than defensive walls. He stressed that dialogue begins by
recognising the dignity of every person and working together for the common
good, even amid social tensions.<o:p></o:p>The opening Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Cardinal
Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, SVD, Archbishop of Tokyo and Secretary General of the
FABC. In his homily, Cardinal Kikuchi highlighted that synodality is a lived
experience rather than an abstract concept. Drawing from his recent visit to a
small farming community in Indonesia, he said genuine hope is born when people
care for one another and journey together in faith. He encouraged the Church to
begin its mission of renewal from grassroots communities.<o:p></o:p>The Assembly has been designed as a truly synodal
experience, with participants engaging in prayer, Conversations in the Spirit,
regional meetings, and group discussions. Deliberations will focus on pastoral
priorities including poverty, migration, conflict, care for creation, and the

Antonio "Junie" Maralit Jr. of San Pablo, Philippines, the gathering
builds upon the wider synodal journey of the universal Church, drawing
inspiration from the FABC 50 General Conference, the Bangkok Document, the
Final Document of the Synod on Synodality, the Jubilee Year of Hope, and the
beginning of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV.<o:p></o:p>The week-long programme includes the participation of Cardinal
Oswald Gracias as the Special Envoy of Pope Leo XIV, a day of recollection led
by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a keynote address by Cardinal Mario Grech on
implementing the Synod on Synodality, and a video message from the Holy Father.<o:p></o:p>The Assembly is expected to conclude with the publication of
two important documents: a Vademecum on Synodality in Asia to guide the local

FABC Plenary Assembly Opens in Jakarta, Calls the Church in Asia to Become Bridge-Builders

New Delhi, 21 July 2026, CBCI: The CBCI Office for
Labour and Apostleship of the Sea has expressed profound sorrow and grief over
the tragic loss of seafarers following recent attacks on cargo ships off the
coast of Ukraine and in the Strait of Hormuz. The Office has also appealed for
an immediate ceasefire and stronger international measures to safeguard
civilian maritime workers.<o:p></o:p>

In a statement issued by Fr. George Thomas Nirappukalayil,
National Secretary of the CBCI Office for Labour and Apostleship of the Sea,
the Office mourned the deaths of Indian seafarers who lost their lives while
serving aboard commercial vessels in conflict-affected waters.<o:p></o:p>

According to the statement, four Indian nationals were
killed and another remains in critical condition following an attack on a cargo
ship near Ukraine. In separate assaults on commercial vessels in the Strait of
Hormuz, at least seven Indian sailors lost their lives, while several others
sustained injuries.<o:p></o:p>

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,
the Office assured them of its prayers and solidarity during this time of
immense sorrow.<o:p></o:p>

"The loss of lives, far from home while serving the
global economy, is a heartbreaking reminder of the severe vulnerabilities our
maritime community faces every day," the statement noted.<o:p></o:p>

The CBCI Office emphasized that the attacks highlight a
disturbing reality in which innocent civilian seafarers become victims of
geopolitical conflicts. Stressing that merchant seafarers play a vital role in
sustaining global trade and supply chains, it affirmed that they should never

Calling for urgent action, the Office appealed to the
leaders of nations involved in the conflicts to work towards an immediate
ceasefire. It also urged the international community and maritime regulatory

In a statement issued today, the CBCI said that the
country's youth, who represent the future of the nation, had taken to the
streets with legitimate demands for greater accountability and reforms in the
education system. It described the use of disproportionate force against
peaceful demonstrators as "a heartbreaking assault on the very soul of our

The CBCI affirmed its solidarity with all the students who
suffered during the crackdown, stating that it stands firmly with them in their

Justice, Peace and Development (JPD) participated in an Interfaith Gathering
for the Promotion of Justice and Peace held at the National Biblical,
Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC), Bengaluru, on 17 July 2026. The
gathering, themed "Promoting Justice and Peace in Our Society,"
brought together leaders and representatives of diverse faith traditions to
strengthen interreligious collaboration for justice, peace, and social harmony

The programme was coordinated by Fr. Vinay, Karnataka

New Delhi, 16 July 2026, CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rt. Rev. Albert Hemrom,
Bishop of Dibrugarh, as the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of
Guwahati. The appointment was made public today by the Holy See.<o:p></o:p>

Bishop Albert Hemrom was born on 27
February 1969 in Konapathar Village, Tinsukia District, Assam. He received his
early priestly formation at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Dibrugarh, and pursued
his philosophical and theological studies at Oriens Theological College,
Shillong. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dibrugarh on 25 April
1999.<o:p></o:p>

Following his ordination, Bishop Hemrom
served the Diocese of Dibrugarh in several pastoral and academic capacities. He
began his ministry as Assistant Parish Priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church,
Rajabari (1999–2001) and later served as Prefect of Studies at St. Joseph’s
Minor Seminary, Dibrugarh (2003–2006). From 2006 to 2011, he was Parish Priest
of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Rajabari.<o:p></o:p>

After completing his doctoral studies, he
held several key diocesan responsibilities, including Judicial Vicar of the
Diocesan Tribunal, Rector of St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Member of the College
of Consultors and Presbyteral Council, Secretary of the Commission for the
Laity and Family, Vocations Promoter, and Lecturer in Canon Law at Oriens
Theological College, Shillong (2014–2018).<o:p></o:p>

Bishop Hemrom earned a Licentiate in Canon
Law from St. Peter’s Pontifical Institute, Bengaluru (2001–2003) and later

CBCI Submits Memorandum to Amit Shah on FCRA, Religious Freedom and Manipur

Mumbai, 5 July 2026, CBCI: The CBCI Legal Cell
convened a Joint Consultation Meeting of the CBCI Justice, Peace &amp;
Development (JPD) Commission, the CBCI Legal Cell, and the National Lawyers
Forum of Priests and Religious (NLFRP) in Mumbai on 5 July 2026. Hosted by Adv.
Sr. Julie George, President of the National Lawyers Forum of Priests and
Religious, the consultation brought together representatives of the three
bodies to strengthen collaboration and develop a common strategy for addressing
legal, human rights, and justice-related issues affecting the Church and
society.<o:p></o:p>

The programme began with a prayer led by Adv. Sr. Julie
George, followed by the inaugural address of Rev. Fr. Dr. Mathew Koyickal,
Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

During the inaugural session, Fr. Koyickal formally handed
over the affiliation letter to the National Lawyers Forum of Priests and
Religious, marking its official affiliation with the CBCI Justice, Peace &amp;
Development Commission and reinforcing institutional collaboration. In his
address, he emphasized the importance of unity and coordinated action among
Church organizations while preserving their distinct identities and missions.
He remarked that the Lawyers Forum must become the "eyes, ears, and mouth
of the Church" in safeguarding its rights and responding effectively to
emerging legal challenges.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Fr. Dr. Christu Raja, Secretary of the CBCI Justice,
Peace &amp; Development Commission, presented the vision, aims, and objectives
of the Commission. He stressed that promoting peace, safeguarding human

solidarity, and subsidiarity are among the Commission's primary commitments. He
noted that the pursuit of justice, respect for human dignity, and the
protection of human rights should remain the guiding principles for all Church

Adv. Sr. Sayujya, Secretary of the CBCI Legal Cell,
presented an overview of the Legal Cell's activities, highlighting its legal
consultations, press conferences, awareness programmes, interventions on legal
and social issues, and its ongoing efforts to provide legal guidance to Church
institutions and individuals.<o:p></o:p>

Adv. Sr. Sheeba Paul presented the aims, objectives, and
future vision of the National Lawyers Forum of Priests and Religious, outlining
the Forum's various areas of legal service and ministry.<o:p></o:p>

A significant part of the consultation focused on
strengthening the organizational structure of the National Lawyers Forum
through the formation of fourteen regional units across the country.
Participants discussed the proposed regional framework to facilitate greater
coordination, networking, and outreach. The proposal will be finalized during
the forthcoming General Body Meeting of the NLFRP, scheduled to be held in
Punjab in October 2026.<o:p></o:p>

The meeting also reviewed the appointment of regional
coordinators. It was decided that wherever vacancies exist, suitable
nominations would be forwarded to the respective Regional Bishops for approval
before final confirmation.<o:p></o:p>

The post-lunch session was graced by Rt. Rev. Stephen
Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, who interacted with the participants and
listened to their concerns. Responding to issues related to creating greater
opportunities for priest and religious lawyers to serve the Church through
legal ministries, Bishop Fernandes assured the gathering that these concerns
would be communicated to the appropriate Church authorities for consideration.<o:p></o:p>

The consultation continued with detailed discussions on
strengthening cooperation among the CBCI Legal Cell, the JPD Commission, and
the National Lawyers Forum of Priests and Religious. Participants emphasized
the need for coordinated legal responses, legal awareness programmes,
systematic documentation of rights violations, stronger networking of lawyers
at the regional and state levels, and sustained advocacy on issues affecting

for Justice, Peace and Development (JPD). He will function from the National
Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC), Bengaluru, which serves as
the national office of the CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and Development.<o:p></o:p>

The CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and Development works to
promote justice, peace, human dignity, human rights, social transformation, and
integral human development in the light of the Church's social teachings. As
Secretary, Rev. Dr. Christu Rajamony will provide leadership to the Office in
advancing these priorities across the country.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 24 November 1967 at Midalakadu in the Diocese of
Kottar to Maria Selvamony and Maria Natsatram, Rev. Dr. Christu Rajamony was
ordained a priest on 18 April 1993 for the Diocese of Kottar.<o:p></o:p>

Over more than three decades of priestly ministry, he has
served in a wide range of pastoral, legal, academic, and administrative
responsibilities. His early ministry included assignments as Assistant Parish
Priest at Mulagumoodu Parish and Parish Priest of St. Eustachius Church,
Packiapuram. During this period, he also served as Secretary of the Children's
Commission of the Tiruthuvapuram Vicariate.<o:p></o:p>

Recognizing his aptitude for legal studies, the Diocese
entrusted him with higher studies in law. He earned a Bachelor of Law from Dr.
Ambedkar Government Law College, Tirunelveli, followed by a Master of Law from
the University of Madras while residing at St. Patrick's Church, St. Thomas
Mount. He later pursued doctoral studies in International Human Rights Law at
Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom, completing his Doctor of Laws
(LL.D.) with a dissertation titled "Sacred Sites and Disputes: Role of
International Law – A Case Study of the Ayodhya Dispute."<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Dr. Christu Rajamony also gained valuable international
pastoral experience by serving at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Hainesport,
in the Diocese of Trenton, USA, and later at Corpus Christi Church, Headington,
Oxford, United Kingdom.<o:p></o:p>

Upon his return to India, he served as Parish Priest of St.
John of the Cross Church, Siluvaipuram, before becoming Director of St.
Xavier's Legal Aid Ministry in the Diocese of Kottar. During this period, he
also served as Secretary of the Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission and
Coordinator of the Prison Ministry of India in the Diocese.<o:p></o:p>

He later served as Parish Priest of Our Lady of Snows
Parish, South Thamaraikulam, and subsequently at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good
Health, Besant Nagar, in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, where he also
practised as an Advocate at the Madras High Court.<o:p></o:p>

Since 2024, he has been serving as Vicar Forane of
Devasahayam Mount Vicariate, Director of St. Xavier's Legal Aid Ministry, and
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Diocese of Kottar.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Dr. Christu Rajamony possesses a distinguished academic
background, holding degrees in Philosophy, Theology, History, Political
Science, Law, and International Human Rights Law. His interdisciplinary
formation has enabled him to make significant contributions in the fields of
legal advocacy, human rights education, social justice, and pastoral ministry.<o:p></o:p>

An accomplished author, he has written several books on
human rights and social concerns, including Manithathai Thedi, Human
Rights Education, Neruppu Pudhidhu, and Minnalin Niram Penmai,

served two consecutive terms as Prior General. The documentary also revisits
his appointment as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and his elevation to
the College of Cardinals in 2023.<o:p></o:p>

Through rare archival footage, previously unreleased

XIV has appointed Rev. Fr. Anand David Xalxo, Vicar General of the Archdiocese
of Ranchi and Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ranchi, as Auxiliary
Bishop of the same Archdiocese.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 20 November 1975 in Mandar, Archdiocese of Ranchi,
Bishop-elect Anand David Xalxo received his early education in Mandar and
completed his high school studies at St. Ignatius School, Gumla. He pursued his
priestly formation at St. John Vianney Minor Seminary, Kolkata, and St.
Albert’s College, Ranchi. He also completed his college studies at St. Xavier’s
College, Ranchi, and his theological studies at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi.
He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Ranchi on 15 May 2006.<o:p></o:p>

Following his ordination, he served as Private Secretary to
His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo from 2006 to 2009. He then pursued
postgraduate studies in Hospital Administration at Muller’s Hospital,
Mangalore, from 2009 to 2011. Thereafter, he served as Associate Director of
the CBCI Society for Medical Education, North India (2011–2015), President of

Calling for a spirit of faith and unity, the CBCI President
urged Catholics to join other Churches and Christian denominations in an
ecumenical expression of common concern and prayer. He encouraged the faithful
to seek God’s wisdom, guidance, and protection through the celebration of the
Holy Eucharist, Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary, prayer services, and
voluntary fasting.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola further encouraged dioceses, parishes,
institutions, and communities to organize ecumenical prayer gatherings where
possible and to invite participation from members of other Christian

As a peaceful and democratic expression of concern, the
Circular also encourages dioceses, parishes, institutions, and communities to
prepare memoranda expressing concerns regarding the proposed legislation and
its possible implications for the Church’s ministries. These memoranda, signed
by the faithful and people of goodwill, may be submitted to the Central
Government through local Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative
Assemblies, who may also be invited to participate in the prayer gatherings.<o:p></o:p>

Quoting St. Paul’s exhortation, “Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6), Cardinal Poola called

Council for Laity and Bishop of Kothamangalam, following the appointment issued

Curiae and Government Pleader before the Delhi High Court. His legal
expertise spans constitutional law, civil law, service law, education, and
human rights.<o:p></o:p>

Pattiyani has rendered notable service to the Church and
society through his leadership in various Catholic and civic organizations. He
served as National Secretary and Spokesperson of the All India Catholic Union
(AICU), National Vice-President of the Christian Legal Association–India,
Executive Member of the Catholic Council of India (CCI), and President of the
Malankara Catholic Association (MCA). He also served as a Member of the Delhi
Minorities Commission and as a Member of the Finance Committee of the Catholic
Bishops’ Conference of India.<o:p></o:p>

In addition, he has been actively associated with several
Church initiatives, including the CBCI Committee for Law and Public Interest
Litigation, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of Delhi, and
Chetanalaya Social Service Society. Through these and other engagements, he has

Diocesan Directors of the Kerala Labour Movement (KLM), the regional wing of
the Workers India Federation (WIF), the national labour movement of the
Catholic Church in India functioning under the CBCI Office for Labour, was held
on 9–10 June 2026 at the Pastoral Centre, Irinjalakuda. The programme, which
also included a priests’ training camp, brought together diocesan directors,
priests, and labour movement leaders for reflection, training, and discussions

Conference of India (CBCI) has appointed Rev. Dr. Devasagayaraj Zackarias of
the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore as the Secretary of the CBCI
Office for Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes (SC/BC), entrusting him with
the responsibility of coordinating and advancing the Church’s mission among
Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes across the country.<o:p></o:p>

Fr. Devasagayaraj has extensive experience in pastoral
ministry, academic engagement, and administration, with a longstanding
commitment to the empowerment of Dalit and marginalized communities. He
previously served as Secretary of the CBCI Office for SC/BC from 2012 to 2018
and as Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) Commission for SC/ST
from 2009 to 2012, contributing significantly to initiatives aimed at social
justice, education, leadership formation, and community development.<o:p></o:p>

Currently, Fr. Devasagayaraj serves as Episcopal Vicar for
Priests and Director of the Archdiocesan Academy for Competitive Examinations

(Corpus Christi) in Madrid on Sunday, calling on Spaniards to rediscover the
transformative power of the Eucharist and to become “protagonists of hope” in

Addressing a congregation of more than 1.2 million faithful
gathered in the Plaza de Cibeles and surrounding avenues, the Holy Father
expressed his joy at being united with them around the Eucharist, which he

mourns the passing of Archbishop Prakash Mallavarapu, Archbishop Emeritus of
Visakhapatnam, who entered eternal rest on Sunday, 7 June 2026, in
Visakhapatnam. He was 77 years old. Funeral arrangements are expected to be
announced shortly.<o:p></o:p>

Born on January 29, 1949, at Jadi-Jamalpur in present-day
Telangana, Archbishop Mallavarapu dedicated his life to the service of the
Church. He was ordained a priest on October 11, 1979, and later pursued higher
studies in philosophy, earning a Ph.D. in Indian Philosophy from Jnana Deepa
Vidyapeeth in 1985.<o:p></o:p>

Pope St. John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cuddapah on
May 22, 1998. He received episcopal ordination and assumed leadership of the
diocese on July 22, 1998. Four years later, on July 26, 2002, he was
transferred as Bishop of Vijayawada, where he continued his pastoral ministry
with dedication and vision.<o:p></o:p>

On July 3, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop
of Visakhapatnam. His installation took place on August 10, 2012, at St.
Peter’s Cathedral, Visakhapatnam, with the then Apostolic Nuncio to India,
Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, presiding over the ceremony. During his
tenure, he guided the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam through significant pastoral
and missionary initiatives and was widely respected for his commitment to
evangelization, education, healthcare, and social outreach.<o:p></o:p>

In 2019, he was entrusted with the additional responsibility
of serving as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Srikakulam. He also
rendered valuable service to the Church in India as Chairman of the CBCI Office
for Health Care, contributing significantly to the Church’s healthcare ministry
and advocacy for holistic human well-being.<o:p></o:p>

On February 17, 2024, Pope Francis accepted his resignation
from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam upon reaching

growing mental health challenges affecting families, children, youth, and the
elderly across India, the CBCI Office for Healthcare, in collaboration with the
Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM) India, organized a two-day Training and
Formation Program for regional and diocesan leaders involved in mental health
ministry. The program was held on May 26–27, 2026, at the St. Dymphna National
Institute of Wellness, Bangalore.<o:p></o:p>

The program was inaugurated by Fr. Santhosh Dias, National
Secretary of the CBCI Office for Healthcare. Leaders and representatives from
various dioceses across the country participated in the formation initiative,
which focused on the effective implementation of the Catholic Mental Health
Ministry Guidelines at the grassroots level.<o:p></o:p>

The training sessions were facilitated by Fr. Shinto Mathew,
OCD, National President of CMHM India; Mr. Edwin Walker, National Vice
President; Sr. Dr. Rani Augustine, MSA, National Director of Outreach; and Sr.

office bearers of the CBCI Office for SC/BC, led by Chairman Most Rev. Jaya Rao
Polimera along with member bishops Most Rev. Peter Rumal Kharadi and Most Rev.
Varghese Ephraim, made their maiden visit to the national office in New Delhi
on 14–15 May 2026. The visit served as an important occasion for the new
leadership to gain a deeper understanding of the concerns of Dalit Christians,
especially the case pending before the Supreme Court of India, and to review
the activities and mission of the Commission.<o:p></o:p>

On the first day, a consultation meeting was organised with
stakeholders and Supreme Court advocates engaged in the legal struggle for
justice on behalf of Dalit Christians. The delegation first met senior advocate
Prashant Bhushan, the main petitioner in Writ Petition (CWP 180/2004), at his
office. He briefed the bishops on the present status of the case, explained
recent legal developments, and clarified the broader context of the
proceedings. The interaction provided valuable orientation to the new office
bearers regarding the legal dimensions of the Dalit Christian issue.<o:p></o:p>

Later in the evening, a meeting with the advocates handling
the case in the Supreme Court was held at the CBCI Conference Hall. The session
began with a prayer led by Rt. Rev. Jaya Rao Polimera, Bishop of Eluru Diocese
and Chairman of the CBCI Office for SC/BC. Fr. Vijay Kumar Nayak, Secretary of

CBCI Expresses Profound Grief Over Tragic Killing of Baptist Leaders in Manipur

New Delhi, May 08, 2026, CBCI: The National
Federation of Churches in India (NFCI) was formally launched during the Fourth
National Ecumenical Bishops’ Fellowship Meeting held at St. John’s National
Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS), Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone
in the ecumenical journey and unity of Churches in India.<o:p></o:p>

The decision to establish the NFCI emerged from the growing
concern among Christian Churches in India over the critical challenges
currently faced by the Christian community, including violent attacks on
pastors and faithful, stringent anti-conversion laws in several States, and
attempts to take over Church properties through amendments to the Foreign
Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and proposals such as Christian Welfare /
Property Boards.<o:p></o:p>

Recognizing the urgent need for a united and collective
response, Church leaders and representatives resolved to create a national
ecumenical platform that would represent the Churches in India with one united
voice. After nearly two years of consultations, deliberations, and drafting of
guidelines, the NFCI was officially launched following the approval and
adoption of its Guidelines during the Fellowship Meeting.<o:p></o:p>

The NFCI aims to function as a national ecumenical body of
Churches, serving as an umbrella organisation and apex body for Christians in
India. It seeks to foster visible unity among member Churches while respecting
their individual identities, traditions, and ecclesiastical structures. The
Federation will also address matters of common concern affecting Churches and

Although several national-level Church forums and councils
already exist, Church leaders noted the absence of a comprehensive and

Around 45 participants attended the Fellowship Meeting,
including Archbishops, Bishops, Church Heads, and delegates representing

Prayer for Christian Unity, jointly prepared by the Dicastery for Promoting

XIV has appointed Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi, currently serving as the
Diocesan Administrator of Warangal, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of
Warangal.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi was born on 8 January 1965
in Manugonda, in the Warangal district of Telangana. He pursued his studies in
Philosophy and Theology at St. John’s Major Seminary, Hyderabad, from 1985 to
1987 and from 1988 to 1991. During the same period, he completed a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Osmania University (1987–1990).<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master of Arts degree from Osmania
University (1996–1998), along with a Bachelor of Education and a Master of
Education from Annamalai University (1995–1996; 1998–1999).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Warangal on 2
April 1992. Over the years, Bishop-designate Duggimpudi has served the Church
in various pastoral, educational, and administrative capacities. His
assignments include Assistant Parish Priest and Hostel Director at St. Joseph’s
Church in the Diocese of Khammam (1992–1993); in charge of the PIME Regional
House and Director of St. Xavier’s Hostel in the Diocese of Eluru (1993–1995);
Parish Priest of Devagripatnam Parish in Warangal (1995–2002); Director and
Legal Representative of Fatima College for Education in Warangal (2002–2009);
Parish Priest of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Velair (2009–2015); Director of
the Lodi Multipurpose Social Service Society in Warangal (2015–2023); and
Director of the Christu Jyothi Institute of Technology and Science in Warangal
(2023–2025).<o:p></o:p>

Since 2025, he has been serving as the Diocesan
Administrator of the Diocese of Warangal. His appointment as Bishop marks a
significant moment for the local Church in Telangana as he assumes the pastoral
leadership of the Diocese.<o:p></o:p>

which permits the forced premature delivery of a 30-week viable foetus. This development
raises profound questions relating to Constitutional law, medical ethics, and the
fundamental right to life of the unborn child.<o:p></o:p>

The order directs the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to terminate a 30-week pregnancy of a 15-year-old
minor. This direction stands in stark contrast to the unanimous and categorical
opinion of the medical experts, who have clearly stated that termination at this
advanced stage is not medically feasible.<o:p></o:p>

Importantly, the medical board suggested
a safer and more humane alternative - deferring delivery by a few weeks to enable
a normal birth. This approach would significantly reduce health risks to the minor
and increase the likelihood of delivering a healthy child. The State also expressed
its willingness to assume responsibility for the child, including facilitating adoption.
Despite this, the order prioritizes “choice” over well-established medical advice
and ethical considerations.<o:p></o:p>

At 30 weeks of gestation, a fetus is
widely recognized as viable and capable of survival outside the womb. Directing
a procedure that may end such life or result in severe harm raises serious concerns
under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees the right to life.
The termination of a viable fetus, particularly when safer alternatives exist, calls
into question the balance between autonomy and the protection of life.<o:p></o:p>

While patient autonomy is an important
principle, it cannot extend to demanding a medically contraindicated and harmful
procedure. Judicial&nbsp; decisions in such sensitive
medico-legal matters must be guided by scientific evidence and expert opinion. Overriding
unanimous medical advice risks setting a concerning precedent and undermines evidence-based
decision- making.<o:p></o:p>

The Hon’ble Court, as the guardian
of minors and those unable to protect their own interests, carries a duty to ensure
their best interests. In this case, expert medical opinion clearly outlined a course
that would safeguard both the minor and the unborn child. Departing from this path
raises concerns regarding the discharge of this responsibility.<o:p></o:p>

Furthermore, the legal framework
governing medical termination of pregnancy permits late- term procedures only under
exceptional circumstances, such as grave risk to the mother or serious fetal abnormalities.
In the present case, medical opinion indicates that continuation of pregnancy for
a short duration is safer, and the fetus is healthy. The present direction appears
to extend beyond the scope of the existing legal framework.<o:p></o:p>

The directive also places medical professionals
in an ethical dilemma by compelling them to undertake a procedure that contradicts
their professional judgment and ethical obligations. Such coercion may adversely
impact the integrity of medical practice and the willingness of experts to
provide independent opinions in judicial proceedings.<o:p></o:p>

While the social and psychological
concerns surrounding early motherhood are acknowledged, they must be balanced against
the certainty of physical harm and the implications for the right to life. The alternative
solution proposed - including State support and adoption - offered a compassionate
and legally sound pathway that warranted greater consideration.<o:p></o:p>

In light of the above, this matter
again calls for immediate and urgent reconsideration in order to save the life
of an innocent unborn, to uphold Constitutional principles, medical ethics, and
the best interests of both the minor and the unborn child.<o:p></o:p>

Constitutional Amendment Bill No. XVIII of 2026, presented by Mr. Bhim Singh,
Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, on “Minority,” and on the way forward
regarding the FCRA, at the CBCI Centre, New Delhi.<o:p></o:p>

The consultation, held from 4:00 PM in the Conference Hall,
brought together around 30 legal experts and stakeholders to deliberate on the
constitutional, legal, and societal implications of recent developments
affecting minority rights in India.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of CBCI,
felicitated Adv. Colin Gonsalves and expressed the Church’s concern regarding
the Constitutional Amendment Bill on minority rights. The session commenced
with Adv. Colin Gonsalves of HRLN presenting on the Constitutional Framework on
Minority Rights, outlining the foundational principles governing minority

Mr. George Kuruvilla, Chartered Accountant, spoke in detail
on Section 15 of the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act provisions,
its objectives, regulations, and its serious implications on the assets of
religious and charitable institutions. He explained that under the proposed
provisions, assets created fully or partially out of foreign contribution funds
may be taken over by the designated authority. Considerable discussion followed
on the implications of this proposal, especially with regard to institutions,
properties, and other assets developed through foreign contributions.<o:p></o:p>

As a way forward, it was suggested that ten substantial
cases be identified and documented in advance so that a comprehensive legal
strategy can be prepared. The participants resolved to remain fully prepared to
challenge the provisions legally if the proposed Bill becomes the Act. The

Panackal (91), a Carmelite priest, theologian, preacher, musician, and noted
composer of Christian devotional music, passed away on Maundy Thursday, 2
April, due to age-related ailments, leaving behind a rich spiritual and musical
legacy.<o:p></o:p>

Fr. Justin Panackal was widely admired for giving life to
several beloved devotional songs cherished by generations of faithful. Among
his most popular compositions is “Paithalam Yeshuve,” beautifully
rendered by K. S. Chithra. His other notable works include “Daivam
Pirakkunnu” and “Manasathin Manivathil.” He shared a close
association with renowned singer K. J. Yesudas, who lent his voice to many of

A member of the Discalced Carmelite congregation (OCD) in
Kerala, belonging to the Manjummel Province, Fr. Justin pursued higher studies
in theology in Rome, where he earned his doctorate. He later served for 28

expressing serious concerns over the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation)
Amendment Bill, 2026. The memorandum, signed by Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto,
Secretary General of CBCI, calls for a more consultative and balanced approach

implications of the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation)
Act, 2010 (FCRA).<o:p></o:p>

The meeting brought together chartered accountants, legal
experts, human rights activists, and representatives from various religions to
examine the legal, social, and humanitarian implications of the proposed Bill.<o:p></o:p>

In his welcome address, Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy
Secretary General of CBCI, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and
informed dialogue, noting that the proposed amendments could have far-reaching

its current form, the proposed amendments could have serious implications for

The first Bishop of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai, established
in 2014, Bishop Varuvel was appointed on 22 December 2014 and ordained bishop
on 24 February 2015. He served the diocese from 2015 until his resignation on 6

The Requiem Mass will be held today, 24 March 2026, at 4:00
p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, Perambur, and will be celebrated by Most

district of the Diocese of Kottar, Bishop Varuvel completed his schooling in
Nagercoil in 1965 and his Pre-University Course at Scott Christian College,
Nagercoil. He joined St. Aloysius Minor Seminary, Nagercoil (1968–1970) as a
candidate for the Diocese of Kottar.<o:p></o:p>

He pursued philosophical studies at Sacred Heart Seminary,
Poonamallee, Chennai (1970–1973), and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics
from Arulanadar College, Karumathur (1973–1976). He joined the Salesians in
1977 and made his first profession on 24 May 1978.<o:p></o:p>

He completed his theological studies at the Salesian
Pontifical University (1981–1985) and was ordained a priest by St. John Paul II
on 2 June 1985 at the Vatican.<o:p></o:p>

Following his priestly ordination, he earned a Master’s
degree in Pedagogy from the Salesian Pontifical University before returning to
India.<o:p></o:p>

In the Chennai Province of the Salesians, he served as Vice
Rector and Rector at various seminaries from 1986 to 2001. He was Provincial
Councillor for two years from 2001 and later served as Director of the
Educational Ministry of the Chennai Province from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was
appointed Director of Don Bosco Mission at Thalavadi and also served as Master

Born on March 13, 1953, in Predore (Bergamo), Italy,
Archbishop Girelli was ordained a priest on June 17, 1978. He holds a Doctorate
in Theology and entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on July 13,
1987.<o:p></o:p>

During his diplomatic career, he served in several Apostolic
Nunciatures around the world, including in Cameroon, New Zealand, and the
United States. He also worked in the Section for General Affairs of the
Secretariat of State of the Holy See.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia on April 13,
2006, and later, on October 10, 2006, Apostolic Nuncio to East Timor. On
January 13, 2011, he was further entrusted with the offices of Apostolic Nuncio

Archbishops, Bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful across India to

Recalling the prophetic vision of peace from the Book of

up sword against nation” (Isaiah 2:4)-the bishops affirmed that this vision is
not mere idealism but a divine mandate calling humanity to reconciliation.<o:p></o:p>

The circular also highlighted the Franciscan Jubilee,
marking eight hundred years since the passing of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose
witness of humility, dialogue, and reconciliation continues to inspire the

As part of the appeal, the CBCI has urged Catholics and all
people of goodwill to undertake concrete spiritual actions, including

acts of penance for the conversion of hearts and the end of violence. The

Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenical Ministry in the Present Context of India
began on March 4, 2026 at the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical
Centre (NBCLC), Bengaluru, organized in collaboration with the CBCI Office for
Dialogue &amp; Desk for Ecumenism and the KRCBC Commission for Interreligious
Dialogue (IRD) &amp; Ecumenism.<o:p></o:p>

The workshop brings together around 75 participants,
including Church leaders, theologians, and pastoral workers, to reflect on the
importance of dialogue, peace-building, and collaboration among different
religious communities in India’s pluralistic society.<o:p></o:p>

The inaugural session began with registration and was hosted
by Rev. Sr. Clarice AC as the Master of Ceremonies. Rev. Dr. Nysson Luka,
Assistant Director of NBCLC, delivered the welcome address, greeting the

The inauguration and keynote address were delivered by Most

sweeping call for a "fast from words that wound" in his official
message for Lent 2026. Released ahead of Ash Wednesday, the document titled
“Listening and Fasting: Lent as a Time of Conversion” challenges the global
Catholic community to move beyond traditional dietary restrictions and focus on
"disarming" their daily language.

The Pontiff identifies the misuse of speech as a primary
barrier to authentic relationships, specifically urging the faithful to refrain
from harsh judgments, gossip, and slander. He noted that this "linguistic
fasting" is particularly critical in modern spaces such as social media
and political debates, where he said words of hatred must give way to words of
hope and peace.Beyond the focus on speech, the Pope emphasized that Lent
should serve as a period to place the mystery of God back at the center of life.
He described fasting as a physical exercise that helps individuals recognize

New Delhi, 14 February 2026, CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV
has appointed Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro, of the clergy of
the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of
Sindhudurg. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Professor at the
Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, Goa.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro was born on
July 6, 1972, in Raia, Goa. He pursued his philosophical and theological
formation at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996
to 2000. In the interim, he completed a degree in Psychology at Goa University
(1993–1996).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Goa and
Daman on October 28, 2000. Following his ordination, he served as Assistant
Pastor at St. Alex Church, Calangute from 2000 to 2001.<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the
Jnana Deepa Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Pune (2002–2004). From 2013
to 2016, he pursued doctoral studies in Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian
University, Rome, earning a Doctorate in Philosophy.<o:p></o:p>

From 2022 to 2023, he served as Administrator of St. Joseph
Church, Dramapur. Since 2017, he has been serving as Professor of Philosophy at

Cardinal Poola Anthony, Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, has been elected
as the new President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) during
its 37th General Body Meeting held on February 7, 2026.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola Anthony was born on November 15, 1961, in
Poluru in the Diocese of Kurnool. After completing his formation at the minor
seminary in Nuzvid, he pursued priestly studies at Saint Peter’s Pontifical
Seminary, Bengaluru. He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1992, and
incardinated into the Diocese of Cuddapah.<o:p></o:p>

In the initial years of his priestly ministry, he served as
parish vicar at Saint Mary’s Cathedral (1992–1993) and Amagampalli (1993–1994),
followed by pastoral service as parish priest in Tekurpet (1994–1995), Badvel
(1995–2000), and Veerapalli (2000–2001). From 2001 to 2003, he pursued higher
studies in the United States, earning a master’s degree in pastoral care and
attending a theology course at Loyola University, Chicago, while offering
pastoral ministry at Saint Genevieve Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago.<o:p></o:p>

From 2004 to 2008, Cardinal Poola Anthony served as Director
of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. He also held several key
responsibilities in the Diocese of Cuddapah, including diocesan consultor,
Secretary for Education, Deputy Administrator of diocesan schools, and
coordinator of the Sponsorship Program.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Bishop of Kurnool on February 8, 2008, and
was consecrated on April 19, 2008. On November 19, 2020, Pope Francis appointed
him Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad. He was created and proclaimed

that the Catholic Church in India - Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara - is
called to be “one heart and one soul,” adding that the CBCI is not just an

200 bishops from 174 dioceses across the country have assembled for prayer,
reflection, and deliberation on matters of national and ecclesial significance.<o:p></o:p></a>

The General Body
Meeting commenced at 9.00 a.m. with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration, during
which Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI, welcomed
the participants. The principal celebrant, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, in his
homily, called upon the bishops to be the light and salt of the earth, filled
with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He urged the shepherds of the Church to be
joyful, kind, faithful, and humble servants in the Lord’s mission, witnessing
Christ’s human love through outreach to the poor and the marginalized. The
Eucharist was concelebrated by senior Church leaders, including Archbishop Mar
Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI; Cardinal Filip Neri Ferrao President of
CCBI, His Beatitude Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar
Church; Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara
Church; Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop Emeritus of Bombay; Archbishop
George Antonysamy, Vice-President I; Archbishop Joseph Mar Thomas,
Vice-President II; and Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Secretary General
of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

The inaugural
session began at 11.00 a.m. with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, invoking
God’s blessings on the deliberations. The Archbishop of Bangalore, host of the
meeting, welcomed the gathering and highlighted that the theme reflects the
Church’s deep commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Archbishop George Antonysamy read out the message of the Holy Father, Pope Leo
XIV. In his inaugural address, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli conveyed the
Apostolic Blessings of the Holy Father and observed that the ideals enshrined
in the Preamble of the Constitution of India resonate deeply with the Church’s
social teachings. He noted that even amid contemporary challenges, the Church
continues to serve the nation through humane development and by contributing to
the moral conscience of society, calling upon Church leaders to seek new
pathways to live and practice faith in harmony with constitutional values.<o:p></o:p>

Delivering the
Presidential Address, Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath stated that the Church
today stands at a critical juncture where conscience is tested and faith is
increasingly scrutinized in the public sphere. He described the theme as a
profound spiritual confession and public responsibility, calling the bishops to
be missionaries of hope and empowerment. Referring to emerging technologies,
particularly Artificial Intelligence, he emphasized the need to humanize
technology and ensure that the human person remains at the centre, urging the
Church to become “digital missionaries.” He further stressed the importance of
deepening the synodal journey, forming leaders for public life, and empowering
the laity, youth, and women.<o:p></o:p>

The Biennial Report
of the CBCI, covering the period from February 2024 to January 2026, was
presented by Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto. On the occasion, thirty-one newly
appointed bishops were felicitated by the Apostolic Nuncio with a shawl and
memento, followed by a solemn moment of silence in remembrance of the bishops
who had passed away. Messages from Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the
Dicastery for the Oriental Churches, and Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle,
Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, were read out. The session
concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Archbishop Joseph Mar Thomas,
Vice-President II of the CBCI, after which Rev Fr Jesudoss Rajamanickam,
Director of St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, outlined the
guidelines for the participants’ stay on the campus.<o:p></o:p>

CBCI 37th General Body Meeting Opens in Bengaluru, Reaffirms Church’s Commitment to India’s Constitutional Vision

Bengaluru, February 3, 2026 CBCI: The Catholic Bishops’
Conference of India (CBCI) will convene its 37th General Body Meeting from
February 4 to February 10, 2026, at St. John’s National Academy of Health
Sciences, Bengaluru. The biennial gathering will bring together Catholic
bishops and Church leaders from across the country to reflect on the Church’s
mission in contemporary India.<o:p></o:p>

The General Body Meeting will be held under the theme “Faith
and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,”
highlighting the Church’s commitment to constitutional values and
nation-building.<o:p></o:p>

The assembly will begin on Wednesday, February 4, with the
Inaugural Holy Eucharist at 9:00 a.m. at St. John’s Auditorium. His Excellency
Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, will be the
Chief Guest for the inaugural session.<o:p></o:p>

In keeping with the theme, the meeting will feature special
sessions on the current socio-political context and constitutional values, with
inputs from eminent legal and academic experts, including former Supreme Court
Judge Mr. Justice K. M. Joseph and Prof. D. Dominic. The agenda also includes
presentations and discussions on reports from various CBCI offices and
commissions, two focused workshops addressing key challenges and possible
solutions, and elections of chairpersons of various CBCI offices as well as the
CBCI office bearers.<o:p></o:p>

A public function will be organised on February 9 to
felicitate distinguished Christians in recognition of their significant
contributions to society and the Church in India.<o:p></o:p>

The General Body Meeting will conclude on February 10 with a
Valedictory Function and a press briefing at 3:30 p.m., followed by the release
of the Final Statement of the 37th CBCI General Body Meeting.<o:p></o:p>

CBCI to Hold 37th General Body Meeting in Bengaluru from February 4–10

Meeting (GBM) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) will be held
from 4 to 10 February 2026 at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences,
Bengaluru. This biennial gathering will bring together Catholic bishops from 174
dioceses across India for prayer, reflection, and deliberation on matters of

The theme of the General Body Meeting, “Faith and the
Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,” resonates
deeply with the CBCI’s motto, “United in Witness.” Rooted in the Gospel and

faith, fostering unity among India’s diverse communities, and promoting

The Inaugural Holy Eucharist on 4 February will be presided
over by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, who
will also deliver the Inaugural Address during the opening ceremony at St.
John’s Auditorium. The Presidential Address will be delivered by Archbishop
Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

During the week-long meeting, the bishops will engage in
in-depth discussions on the chosen theme, examining its ecclesial, social, and
political relevance, particularly in the current context marked by challenges
to constitutional values and increasing concerns over attacks on Christian

The 37th CBCI General Body Meeting is being meticulously
prepared under the guidance of the leadership of the CBCI especially Rev. Dr. Mathew
Koyickal, Deputy secretary General CBCI, with active collaboration from various
CBCI offices and commissions and, along with the support of the officials of St.
John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, an institution managed by the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.<o:p></o:p>

<div>New Delhi, January 31, 2026 CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Udupi submitted by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo, in accordance with Canon 401 §1 of the Code of Canon Law.</div><div> </div><div>Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo was born on November 12, 1949, at Agrar, a small town in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. He was ordained a priest on May 5, 1977, for the Diocese of Mangalore. In the early years of his priestly ministry, he served as Assistant Parish Priest and Parish Priest in various parishes of the Diocese of Mangalore.</div><div> </div><div>Subsequently, Bishop Lobo was appointed Director of the “CODP” and later entrusted with the responsibility of Episcopal Vicar of Kasaragod in Kerala. On March 20, 2000, he was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Shivamoga by Archbishop Ignatius Paul Pinto of the Archdiocese of Bangalore.</div><div> </div><div>After shepherding the Diocese of Shivamoga for 13 years, he was appointed as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi, where he provided dedicated pastoral leadership since its establishment.At present, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo serves as the Chairman of the CBCI National Office for Justice, Peace and Development.</div><div> </div><div>The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India expresses its gratitude for his devoted service to the Church and prays for God’s continued blessings upon him as he steps down from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Udupi.</div><div> </div>

Pope Leo XIV Accepts Resignation of Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo as Bishop of Udupi

<div>New Delhi, January 31, 2026 CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, a priest of the Diocese of Udupi, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi.</div><div> </div><div>Rev. D’Souza currently serves as the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva, Udupi. Born on August 19, 1962, in Uchila (Yermal), Udupi Taluk, Karnataka, he was ordained a priest on May 10, 1990.</div><div> </div><div>He completed his seminary formation at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore (1982–1985), and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome (1986–1990). He also holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Mysore and a Diploma in Depth Psychology and Formation from the Institute for Psychology and Formation, Bangalore. Furthering his academic pursuits, he earned a Licentiate in Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and completed his Ph.D. in Moral Theology at the same university between 1997 and 2003.</div><div> </div><div>Following his priestly ordination, Rev. D’Souza served as Assistant Parish Priest at Holy Rosary Church, Kundapur, Udupi (1990–1992), and at Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar, Mangalore (1992–1995). From 2003 to 2010, he was a Professor of Moral Theology at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore.</div><div> </div><div>He later served as Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist Church, Pangla (2010–2017), and Our Lady of Rosary Church, Kallianpur (2017–2022). Pope Leo XIV Appoints Rev. Leslie Clifford D’Souza as Bishop of Udupi

New Delhi, 25 January 2026, CBCI: Mar Dominic Kokkat,
C.S.T., the founding Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Gorakhpur in Uttar
Pradesh, passed away on Sunday, 25 January 2026. He was 93. Funeral
arrangements will be announced later.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 23 February 1932 at Vaikom in Kerala, he was
baptized as Joseph and joined the Little Flower Congregation (C.S.T.) in 1953,
taking the religious name Dominic. He received his major seminary formation and
theological studies at the Papal Seminary, Kandy (Sri Lanka), and in Pune, and
was ordained a priest on 4 October 1960.<o:p></o:p>

During his priestly ministry, Mar Dominic Kokkat served his
congregation in several key roles, including Vice Rector of the C.S.T.
Philosophical Seminary, Alwaye; Principal of the Technical School, Alwaye; and
Mission Superior of the C.S.T. Mission in Punjab. He also served as Assistant
Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), New Delhi, from
1978 to 1982. He held a Diploma in Social Work from the Coady International
Institute, Canada.<o:p></o:p>

On 4 October 1984, he was ordained the first Bishop of the
newly established Diocese of Gorakhpur and was formally installed on 14 October
1984. Known for his deep concern for the poor and the marginalized, he
initiated several pastoral and social apostolates in the diocese, enabling the
downtrodden and neglected to find dignity and a rightful place in society.<o:p></o:p>

Inspired by St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the charism
of his congregation, he founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of St.
Thérèse (LST) in 1988. After shepherding the Diocese of Gorakhpur with
dedication and zeal, he became Bishop Emeritus in 2006.<o:p></o:p>

Mar Dominic Kokkat, First Bishop of Syro-Malabar Diocese of Gorakhpur, Passes Away at 93

New Delhi, 24 January 2026, CBCI: &nbsp;Mar Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Thrissur
and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), has lodged a
formal complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Thrissur City, regarding a
serious case of cyber fraud and identity misuse.<o:p></o:p>

In his complaint, Archbishop Thazhath stated that unknown
individuals are fraudulently using his photograph while impersonating him under
different names and falsely claiming to hold senior positions such as Secretary
General or heads of offices associated with the CBCI. These impersonators have
reportedly been contacting priests, seminarians, religious, politicians, and
members of the general public.<o:p></o:p>

According to the complaint, the nature of these fraudulent
communications varies. In several instances, recipients were asked to share OTP
numbers received on their mobile phones. In other cases, they were invited to
join video conference links under the pretext of discussing CBCI-related
matters. There have also been reports of financial assistance being solicited
in the name of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

Archbishop Thazhath categorically clarified that neither he
nor his office, nor any authorised office of the CBCI, has initiated or
approved such calls, messages, video conference links, or requests for
financial assistance. He noted that these acts amount to deliberate
impersonation, deception, and potential cyber fraud, causing serious confusion,
reputational damage, and posing risks to the safety and trust of the public.<o:p></o:p>

He further informed the police that the frequency of such
incidents is increasing and has attached screenshots of calls received by his
acquaintances as evidence.<o:p></o:p>

Seeking urgent intervention, the CBCI President requested
the police to register the complaint, conduct a thorough investigation,
identify those responsible, and take appropriate legal action to prevent
further misuse of identity and protect the public from being deceived.<o:p></o:p>

CBCI President Files Complaint with Thrissur Police Over Cyber Fraud and Identity Misuse

New Delhi, 22 January 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly condemned the heinous attack on a Christian pastor in Odisha, describing the incident as a grave act of violence and humiliation that strikes at the core of human dignity and religious freedom.The CBCI expressed deep anguish over reports that the pastor was forcibly made to eat cow dung, calling it an inhuman act that not only degrades an individual but also targets his faith. Such acts, the bishops said, have no place in a civilized and democratic society.Demanding immediate and stringent action, the CBCI urged the authorities to identify and punish the perpetrators without delay and to ensure justice for the victim. The Conference affirmed its solidarity with the pastor and reiterated its commitment to standing with all victims of violence and discrimination.<o:p></o:p>Appealing for peace and harmony, the CBCI called upon citizens across the country to reject violence in all its forms and to work together to uphold mutual respect, fraternity, and the constitutional values of India.<o:p></o:p>&nbsp;
