The National Day of Prayer was called by the CBCI in
response to concerns arising from the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation
Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, 2026. The initiative invited Catholics throughout
India to unite in prayer, entrusting the nation and the Church in India to the
loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of India.<o:p></o:p>

The Eucharistic Adoration at the CBCI Centre began with a
prayer led by Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI,
who invoked God's guidance, protection, and wisdom for the nation, its leaders,
and the Church in India. Staff members, priests, religious, and the faithful
joined in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the day.<o:p></o:p>

The nine-hour Adoration, which commenced in the morning,
will conclude at 6:00 p.m. with the Benediction and Blessing of the Blessed
Sacrament, marking the culmination of the National Day of Prayer at the CBCI

CBCI reaffirmed its faith in the power of prayer and called upon the faithful

Religious Forum (TLRF) successfully conducted its Annual Conference 2026 on 26
June 2026 at Chiguru Don Bosco Navajeevan Bala Bhavan, Guntur, bringing
together legal professionals, priests, and religious for a day of professional
enrichment, reflection, and dialogue on contemporary legal, social, and
pastoral issues.<o:p></o:p>

The conference commenced at 9:30 a.m. with an inspiring
inaugural address by Most Rev. Dr. Jaya Rao Polimera, Bishop of Eluru. In his
keynote address, the Bishop underscored the vital role of legal professionals
and faith-based communities in promoting justice, integrity, equality, and
compassion in society. Emphasizing that the pursuit of justice is a shared
moral and social responsibility, he encouraged participants to work actively
towards eliminating discrimination and safeguarding the dignity of every individual.<o:p></o:p>

The first technical session was presented by Adv. Sr. Jessy
Kurian, President of the Telugu Lawyers and Religious Forum, who delivered an
insightful presentation on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). She examined the legal

constitutional, social, and practical implications, particularly concerning
marriage, family life, and the protection of constitutional values. Her

The second session was led by Adv. Fr. Raju Alex, who
offered valuable legal insights and practical guidance to priests and religious
members. Drawing upon his legal expertise, he addressed important legal

advocate and a responsible client, stressing the importance of maintaining
healthy professional relationships between the Bench and the Bar. His practical

An interactive discussion session, facilitated by Adv. Sr.
Jessy Kurian, focused on the TLRF Action Plan for 2026, strengthening diocesan

affecting the Church and society, and explored practical strategies for
strengthening legal awareness and collaboration across the dioceses. The

The film traces nearly two decades of the life of Robert
Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, beginning with his arrival in Rome from the
United States in 1981. It highlights his years of formation, pastoral ministry,
academic pursuits, and leadership within the Order of Saint Augustine, where he
served two consecutive terms as Prior General. The documentary also revisits
his appointment as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and his elevation to
the College of Cardinals in 2023.<o:p></o:p>

Through rare archival footage, previously unreleased
photographs, and personal testimonies, Leo in Rome presents a compelling
narrative of the relationships, experiences, and milestones that shaped the
future Pontiff. Fellow Augustinians, former classmates, longtime friends,
members of the Order, and collaborators from the Dicastery for Bishops share
their memories, offering viewers a unique insight into the Pope's spiritual

New Delhi, 24 June 2026, CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo
XIV has appointed Rev. Fr. Anand David Xalxo, Vicar General of the Archdiocese
of Ranchi and Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ranchi, as Auxiliary
Bishop of the same Archdiocese.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 20 November 1975 in Mandar, Archdiocese of Ranchi,
Bishop-elect Anand David Xalxo received his early education in Mandar and
completed his high school studies at St. Ignatius School, Gumla. He pursued his
priestly formation at St. John Vianney Minor Seminary, Kolkata, and St.
Albert’s College, Ranchi. He also completed his college studies at St. Xavier’s
College, Ranchi, and his theological studies at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi.
He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Ranchi on 15 May 2006.<o:p></o:p>

Following his ordination, he served as Private Secretary to
His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo from 2006 to 2009. He then pursued
postgraduate studies in Hospital Administration at Muller’s Hospital,
Mangalore, from 2009 to 2011. Thereafter, he served as Associate Director of
the CBCI Society for Medical Education, North India (2011–2015), President of
the Council of Diocesan Priests of India in the Bijhan Region (2011–2015),
Governing Board Member of the CBCI Lieven’s Hospital Project, Mandar (2011–2020),
and Secretary to the Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of

New Delhi, 17 June 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops’
Conference of India (CBCI) has called upon all Catholics across the country to
observe Sunday, 28 June 2026, as a National Day of Prayer in response to
concerns arising from the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA)
Amendment Bill 2026, which is expected to be taken up during the forthcoming
Monsoon Session of Parliament.<o:p></o:p>

In a Circular addressed to all Bishops, Priests, Religious,
and Lay Faithful of the Catholic Church in India, CBCI President H.E.
Anthony Cardinal Poola, Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, invited
the faithful to unite in prayer for the nation, for public authorities, and for
the continued freedom of the Church to carry out its mission of service.<o:p></o:p>

The Circular notes that the proposed legislation has
generated concerns regarding its potential impact on the charitable,
educational, healthcare, and social ministries undertaken by Churches and
Christian institutions throughout the country. Recalling the Church’s
longstanding commitment to serving the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable
sections of society, Cardinal Poola emphasized that these ministries are a
concrete expression of the Gospel values of love, justice, and compassion.<o:p></o:p>

Calling for a spirit of faith and unity, the CBCI President
urged Catholics to join other Churches and Christian denominations in an
ecumenical expression of common concern and prayer. He encouraged the faithful
to seek God’s wisdom, guidance, and protection through the celebration of the
Holy Eucharist, Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary, prayer services, and
voluntary fasting.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola further encouraged dioceses, parishes,
institutions, and communities to organize ecumenical prayer gatherings where
possible and to invite participation from members of other Christian
communities.<o:p></o:p>

As a peaceful and democratic expression of concern, the
Circular also encourages dioceses, parishes, institutions, and communities to
prepare memoranda expressing concerns regarding the proposed legislation and
its possible implications for the Church’s ministries. These memoranda, signed
by the faithful and people of goodwill, may be submitted to the Central
Government through local Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative
Assemblies, who may also be invited to participate in the prayer gatherings.<o:p></o:p>

Quoting St. Paul’s exhortation, “Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6), Cardinal Poola called
upon the faithful to remain steadfast in faith while continuing to work for
peace, justice, harmony, and the common good of the nation.<o:p></o:p>

Entrusting India and the Church to the maternal intercession
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of India, the CBCI President invited all
Catholics to participate wholeheartedly in the National Day of Prayer. He also

Pattiyani, a member of the Mar Chrysostom Delhi-Gurgaon Malankara Catholic
Diocese of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and an Advocate-on-Record at the
Supreme Court of India, assumed charge as Secretary of the CBCI Council for
Laity on 7 June 2026 at the Bishop’s House, Kothamangalam.<o:p></o:p>

The handing-over and taking-over ceremony was held during a
meeting convened by Most Rev. Mar George Madathikandathil, Chairman of the CBCI
Council for Laity and Bishop of Kothamangalam, following the appointment issued
by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). On the occasion, Chevalier
Adv. V. C. Sebastian Valliamthadathil, outgoing Secretary of the Council,
formally handed over the responsibilities of the office to Pattiyani. <o:p></o:p>

The CBCI Council for Laity serves as a national platform for

faithful, encouraging their active involvement in the life and mission of the

A law graduate of ILS Law College, Pune, Pattiyani has been
practicing before the Supreme Court of India and various courts in Delhi for
several decades. He has served as counsel for the Union of India before the
Supreme Court and has also been entrusted with responsibilities as Amicus
Curiae and Government Pleader before the Delhi High Court. His legal
expertise spans constitutional law, civil law, service law, education, and
human rights.<o:p></o:p>

Pattiyani has rendered notable service to the Church and
society through his leadership in various Catholic and civic organizations. He
served as National Secretary and Spokesperson of the All India Catholic Union
(AICU), National Vice-President of the Christian Legal Association–India,
Executive Member of the Catholic Council of India (CCI), and President of the
Malankara Catholic Association (MCA). He also served as a Member of the Delhi
Minorities Commission and as a Member of the Finance Committee of the Catholic
Bishops’ Conference of India.<o:p></o:p>

In addition, he has been actively associated with several
Church initiatives, including the CBCI Committee for Law and Public Interest
Litigation, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of Delhi, and
Chetanalaya Social Service Society. Through these and other engagements, he has
contributed to legal advocacy, social justice initiatives, youth empowerment,
and the promotion of Christian values in public life.<o:p></o:p>

Adv. Abraham M. Pattiyani Assumes Charge as Secretary of CBCI Council for Laity

Irinjalakuda, 10 June 2026, CBCI: The meeting of
Diocesan Directors of the Kerala Labour Movement (KLM), the regional wing of
the Workers India Federation (WIF), the national labour movement of the
Catholic Church in India functioning under the CBCI Office for Labour, was held
on 9–10 June 2026 at the Pastoral Centre, Irinjalakuda. The programme, which
also included a priests’ training camp, brought together diocesan directors,
priests, and labour movement leaders for reflection, training, and discussions
on contemporary challenges facing workers.<o:p></o:p>

The programme was inaugurated by Bishop Mar Pauly
Kannookadan, who emphasized the importance of Catholic Social Teaching in
empowering workers through a development process that responsibly integrates
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Referring to the new encyclical of
Pope Leo XIV, he underscored the Church’s enduring commitment to safeguarding

Recalling the principles enshrined in Rerum Novarum,

and guidance of Most Rev. Jaya Rao Polimera, Chairperson of the CBCI Office for
SC/BC. Rev. Dr. Mathew Koikal, Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI, along with

Fr. Devasagayaraj takes over the leadership of the Office
with extensive experience in pastoral ministry, administration, and advocacy
for the rights and empowerment of Scheduled Castes and marginalized

from 2012 to 2018 and has held several leadership positions at the diocesan,

Fr. Nayak played a significant role in pursuing the legal
case before the Supreme Court concerning the Scheduled Caste status of Dalit

Dalit Christian movements across the country. His efforts in strengthening
collaboration and promoting the mission of the Office received widespread

Conference of India (CBCI) has appointed Rev. Dr. Devasagayaraj Zackarias of
the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore as the Secretary of the CBCI
Office for Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes (SC/BC), entrusting him with
the responsibility of coordinating and advancing the Church’s mission among
Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes across the country.<o:p></o:p>

Fr. Devasagayaraj has extensive experience in pastoral
ministry, academic engagement, and administration, with a longstanding
commitment to the empowerment of Dalit and marginalized communities. He
previously served as Secretary of the CBCI Office for SC/BC from 2012 to 2018
and as Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) Commission for SC/ST
from 2009 to 2012, contributing significantly to initiatives aimed at social
justice, education, leadership formation, and community development.<o:p></o:p>

Currently, Fr. Devasagayaraj serves as Episcopal Vicar for
Priests and Director of the Archdiocesan Academy for Competitive Examinations
in the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. Over the years, he has held
several key pastoral and leadership positions, including Rector of Our Lady of
Periyanayagi Shrine, Konankuppam, Pastor of Assumption Church, Nellithope, and
Director of the Job Placement and Training Office for Dalit Unemployed Youth, a

Fr. Devasagayaraj holds a Ph.D. from Tamil University,
Thanjavur. He also earned an M.A. in Sociology and a Bachelor of General Laws
(B.G.L.) from Annamalai University, Chidambaram, and a Diploma in Development

Visakhapatnam. He was 77 years old. Funeral arrangements are expected to be

Born on January 29, 1949, at Jadi-Jamalpur in present-day
Telangana, Archbishop Mallavarapu dedicated his life to the service of the
Church. He was ordained a priest on October 11, 1979, and later pursued higher
studies in philosophy, earning a Ph.D. in Indian Philosophy from Jnana Deepa
Vidyapeeth in 1985.<o:p></o:p>

Pope St. John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cuddapah on
May 22, 1998. He received episcopal ordination and assumed leadership of the
diocese on July 22, 1998. Four years later, on July 26, 2002, he was
transferred as Bishop of Vijayawada, where he continued his pastoral ministry
with dedication and vision.<o:p></o:p>

On July 3, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop
of Visakhapatnam. His installation took place on August 10, 2012, at St.
Peter’s Cathedral, Visakhapatnam, with the then Apostolic Nuncio to India,
Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, presiding over the ceremony. During his
tenure, he guided the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam through significant pastoral

Formation Program for regional and diocesan leaders involved in mental health
ministry. The program was held on May 26–27, 2026, at the St. Dymphna National
Institute of Wellness, Bangalore.<o:p></o:p>

The program was inaugurated by Fr. Santhosh Dias, National
Secretary of the CBCI Office for Healthcare. Leaders and representatives from
various dioceses across the country participated in the formation initiative,
which focused on the effective implementation of the Catholic Mental Health
Ministry Guidelines at the grassroots level.<o:p></o:p>

The training sessions were facilitated by Fr. Shinto Mathew,
OCD, National President of CMHM India; Mr. Edwin Walker, National Vice

Sr. Lilly Francis served as the Executive Secretary of the
CBCI Commission/Council for Women from 2004 to 2011 and dedicated her life
wholeheartedly to the empowerment, dignity, and leadership of women in the
Church and society.<o:p></o:p>

Remembering her remarkable contribution, the Council noted
that Sr. Lilly Francis rendered exemplary service through her visionary
leadership, commitment to gender justice, legal awareness, and grassroots
empowerment initiatives. She played a pivotal role in promoting the CBCI Gender
Policy and strengthening women’s participation within the Church.<o:p></o:p>

Through her writings, seminars, advocacy efforts, and
formation programmes, she inspired and empowered thousands of women across

emphasized the urgent need to organize unorganized workers, especially

stressed the importance of empowering workers at the grassroots level and

New Delhi, 19 May 2026, CBCI: The newly appointed
office bearers of the CBCI Office for SC/BC, led by Chairman Most Rev. Jaya Rao
Polimera along with member bishops Most Rev. Peter Rumal Kharadi and Most Rev.
Varghese Ephraim, made their maiden visit to the national office in New Delhi
on 14–15 May 2026. The visit served as an important occasion for the new
leadership to gain a deeper understanding of the concerns of Dalit Christians,
especially the case pending before the Supreme Court of India, and to review
the activities and mission of the Commission.<o:p></o:p>

On the first day, a consultation meeting was organised with
stakeholders and Supreme Court advocates engaged in the legal struggle for
justice on behalf of Dalit Christians. The delegation first met senior advocate
Prashant Bhushan, the main petitioner in Writ Petition (CWP 180/2004), at his
office. He briefed the bishops on the present status of the case, explained
recent legal developments, and clarified the broader context of the
proceedings. The interaction provided valuable orientation to the new office

Later in the evening, a meeting with the advocates handling
the case in the Supreme Court was held at the CBCI Conference Hall. The session

office with a dedicated team of committed advocates, building constructive
engagement with secular-minded political leaders and parties to raise the issue
in Parliament, and identifying members of the judiciary who studied in

Federation of Churches in India (NFCI) was formally launched during the Fourth
National Ecumenical Bishops’ Fellowship Meeting held at St. John’s National
Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS), Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone
in the ecumenical journey and unity of Churches in India.<o:p></o:p>

The decision to establish the NFCI emerged from the growing
concern among Christian Churches in India over the critical challenges
currently faced by the Christian community, including violent attacks on
pastors and faithful, stringent anti-conversion laws in several States, and
attempts to take over Church properties through amendments to the Foreign
Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and proposals such as Christian Welfare /
Property Boards.<o:p></o:p>

Recognizing the urgent need for a united and collective
response, Church leaders and representatives resolved to create a national
ecumenical platform that would represent the Churches in India with one united
voice. After nearly two years of consultations, deliberations, and drafting of
guidelines, the NFCI was officially launched following the approval and
adoption of its Guidelines during the Fellowship Meeting.<o:p></o:p>

The NFCI aims to function as a national ecumenical body of
Churches, serving as an umbrella organisation and apex body for Christians in
India. It seeks to foster visible unity among member Churches while respecting

Although several national-level Church forums and councils

Around 45 participants attended the Fellowship Meeting,
including Archbishops, Bishops, Church Heads, and delegates representing
various Christian denominations. The gathering began with an Ecumenical Prayer
Service for Christian Unity adapted from the 2026 Resources for the Week of
Prayer for Christian Unity, jointly prepared by the Dicastery for Promoting
Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church and the Commission on Faith and

XIV has appointed Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi, currently serving as the
Diocesan Administrator of Warangal, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of

Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi was born on 8 January 1965
in Manugonda, in the Warangal district of Telangana. He pursued his studies in
Philosophy and Theology at St. John’s Major Seminary, Hyderabad, from 1985 to
1987 and from 1988 to 1991. During the same period, he completed a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Osmania University (1987–1990).<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master of Arts degree from Osmania
University (1996–1998), along with a Bachelor of Education and a Master of
Education from Annamalai University (1995–1996; 1998–1999).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Warangal on 2
April 1992. Over the years, Bishop-designate Duggimpudi has served the Church
in various pastoral, educational, and administrative capacities. His
assignments include Assistant Parish Priest and Hostel Director at St. Joseph’s
Church in the Diocese of Khammam (1992–1993); in charge of the PIME Regional
House and Director of St. Xavier’s Hostel in the Diocese of Eluru (1993–1995);
Parish Priest of Devagripatnam Parish in Warangal (1995–2002); Director and
Legal Representative of Fatima College for Education in Warangal (2002–2009);
Parish Priest of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Velair (2009–2015); Director of
the Lodi Multipurpose Social Service Society in Warangal (2015–2023); and
Director of the Christu Jyothi Institute of Technology and Science in Warangal
(2023–2025).<o:p></o:p>

Since 2025, he has been serving as the Diocesan
Administrator of the Diocese of Warangal. His appointment as Bishop marks a
significant moment for the local Church in Telangana as he assumes the pastoral

which permits the forced premature delivery of a 30-week viable foetus. This development
raises profound questions relating to Constitutional law, medical ethics, and the
fundamental right to life of the unborn child.<o:p></o:p>

The order directs the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to terminate a 30-week pregnancy of a 15-year-old
minor. This direction stands in stark contrast to the unanimous and categorical
opinion of the medical experts, who have clearly stated that termination at this
advanced stage is not medically feasible.<o:p></o:p>

Importantly, the medical board suggested
a safer and more humane alternative - deferring delivery by a few weeks to enable
a normal birth. This approach would significantly reduce health risks to the minor
and increase the likelihood of delivering a healthy child. The State also expressed
its willingness to assume responsibility for the child, including facilitating adoption.
Despite this, the order prioritizes “choice” over well-established medical advice
and ethical considerations.<o:p></o:p>

At 30 weeks of gestation, a fetus is
widely recognized as viable and capable of survival outside the womb. Directing
a procedure that may end such life or result in severe harm raises serious concerns
under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees the right to life.
The termination of a viable fetus, particularly when safer alternatives exist, calls
into question the balance between autonomy and the protection of life.<o:p></o:p>

While patient autonomy is an important
principle, it cannot extend to demanding a medically contraindicated and harmful
procedure. Judicial&nbsp; decisions in such sensitive
medico-legal matters must be guided by scientific evidence and expert opinion. Overriding
unanimous medical advice risks setting a concerning precedent and undermines evidence-based
decision- making.<o:p></o:p>

The Hon’ble Court, as the guardian
of minors and those unable to protect their own interests, carries a duty to ensure
their best interests. In this case, expert medical opinion clearly outlined a course
that would safeguard both the minor and the unborn child. Departing from this path
raises concerns regarding the discharge of this responsibility.<o:p></o:p>

Furthermore, the legal framework
governing medical termination of pregnancy permits late- term procedures only under
exceptional circumstances, such as grave risk to the mother or serious fetal abnormalities.
In the present case, medical opinion indicates that continuation of pregnancy for
a short duration is safer, and the fetus is healthy. The present direction appears
to extend beyond the scope of the existing legal framework.<o:p></o:p>

The directive also places medical professionals
in an ethical dilemma by compelling them to undertake a procedure that contradicts
their professional judgment and ethical obligations. Such coercion may adversely
impact the integrity of medical practice and the willingness of experts to
provide independent opinions in judicial proceedings.<o:p></o:p>

While the social and psychological
concerns surrounding early motherhood are acknowledged, they must be balanced against
the certainty of physical harm and the implications for the right to life. The alternative
solution proposed - including State support and adoption - offered a compassionate

In light of the above, this matter
again calls for immediate and urgent reconsideration in order to save the life

Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, on “Minority,” and on the way forward

The consultation, held from 4:00 PM in the Conference Hall,
brought together around 30 legal experts and stakeholders to deliberate on the
constitutional, legal, and societal implications of recent developments

its objectives, regulations, and its serious implications on the assets of
religious and charitable institutions. He explained that under the proposed
provisions, assets created fully or partially out of foreign contribution funds
may be taken over by the designated authority. Considerable discussion followed
on the implications of this proposal, especially with regard to institutions,
properties, and other assets developed through foreign contributions.<o:p></o:p>

As a way forward, it was suggested that ten substantial
cases be identified and documented in advance so that a comprehensive legal
strategy can be prepared. The participants resolved to remain fully prepared to
challenge the provisions legally if the proposed Bill becomes the Act. The

The first Bishop of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai, established
in 2014, Bishop Varuvel was appointed on 22 December 2014 and ordained bishop
on 24 February 2015. He served the diocese from 2015 until his resignation on 6
June 2020.<o:p></o:p>

The Requiem Mass will be held today, 24 March 2026, at 4:00
p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, Perambur, and will be celebrated by Most

Nagercoil in 1965 and his Pre-University Course at Scott Christian College,
Nagercoil. He joined St. Aloysius Minor Seminary, Nagercoil (1968–1970) as a
candidate for the Diocese of Kottar.<o:p></o:p>

He pursued philosophical studies at Sacred Heart Seminary,
Poonamallee, Chennai (1970–1973), and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics
from Arulanadar College, Karumathur (1973–1976). He joined the Salesians in
1977 and made his first profession on 24 May 1978.<o:p></o:p>

He completed his theological studies at the Salesian
Pontifical University (1981–1985) and was ordained a priest by St. John Paul II
on 2 June 1985 at the Vatican.<o:p></o:p>

Following his priestly ordination, he earned a Master’s
degree in Pedagogy from the Salesian Pontifical University before returning to
India.<o:p></o:p>

In the Chennai Province of the Salesians, he served as Vice
Rector and Rector at various seminaries from 1986 to 2001. He was Provincial
Councillor for two years from 2001 and later served as Director of the
Educational Ministry of the Chennai Province from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was
appointed Director of Don Bosco Mission at Thalavadi and also served as Master

Charity have issued a strong warning against the unauthorized use of Mother
Teresa’s name, image, and legacy by various organizations for promotional and
fundraising activities, stating that such actions violate her principles and
the values of the congregation she founded.<o:p></o:p>

In an official communication, Sr. M. Joseph MC, Superior
General of the Missionaries of Charity, expressed deep concern over the growing
number of organizations misusing Mother Teresa’s identity without permission.
The congregation emphasized that it is the only religious order founded by
Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to the service of the poorest of the poor

the Church in the region during his five-year tenure.<o:p></o:p>

Born on March 13, 1953, in Predore (Bergamo), Italy,
Archbishop Girelli was ordained a priest on June 17, 1978. He holds a Doctorate
in Theology and entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on July 13,
1987.<o:p></o:p>

During his diplomatic career, he served in several Apostolic
Nunciatures around the world, including in Cameroon, New Zealand, and the
United States. He also worked in the Section for General Affairs of the
Secretariat of State of the Holy See.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia on April 13,
2006, and later, on October 10, 2006, Apostolic Nuncio to East Timor. On
January 13, 2011, he was further entrusted with the offices of Apostolic Nuncio
to Singapore, Apostolic Delegate to Malaysia and Brunei, and non-resident
Pontifical Representative to Vietnam.<o:p></o:p>

Later, on September 13, 2017, he was appointed Apostolic
Nuncio to Israel and Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine. Two days

Conference of India (CBCI) has issued an urgent circular calling for nationwide
prayers and spiritual solidarity for peace as the escalating war in the Middle
East continues to cause immense suffering among civilians.<o:p></o:p>

In the circular, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Poola,
President of the CBCI and Archbishop of Hyderabad, appealed to all Cardinals,
Archbishops, Bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful across India to
intensify prayer and acts of penance for peace.<o:p></o:p>

The CBCI expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict,
noting that innocent civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence. Families
have been displaced, children are growing up amid fear and uncertainty, and
essential institutions such as places of worship and hospitals have not been

New Delhi, 14 February 2026, CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV
has appointed Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro, of the clergy of
the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of
Sindhudurg. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Professor at the
Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, Goa.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro was born on
July 6, 1972, in Raia, Goa. He pursued his philosophical and theological
formation at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996
to 2000. In the interim, he completed a degree in Psychology at Goa University
(1993–1996).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Goa and
Daman on October 28, 2000. Following his ordination, he served as Assistant
Pastor at St. Alex Church, Calangute from 2000 to 2001.<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the
Jnana Deepa Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Pune (2002–2004). From 2013
to 2016, he pursued doctoral studies in Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian
University, Rome, earning a Doctorate in Philosophy.<o:p></o:p>

From 2022 to 2023, he served as Administrator of St. Joseph
Church, Dramapur. Since 2017, he has been serving as Professor of Philosophy at
the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol. In 2018, he was appointed in charge of the
Apostolate of Interreligious Dialogue in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola Anthony Elected President as CBCI Elects New Office Bearers

Bengaluru, February 7, 2026, CBCI: His Eminence
Cardinal Poola Anthony, Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, has been elected
as the new President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) during
its 37th General Body Meeting held on February 7, 2026.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola Anthony was born on November 15, 1961, in
Poluru in the Diocese of Kurnool. After completing his formation at the minor
seminary in Nuzvid, he pursued priestly studies at Saint Peter’s Pontifical
Seminary, Bengaluru. He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1992, and
incardinated into the Diocese of Cuddapah.<o:p></o:p>

In the initial years of his priestly ministry, he served as
parish vicar at Saint Mary’s Cathedral (1992–1993) and Amagampalli (1993–1994),
followed by pastoral service as parish priest in Tekurpet (1994–1995), Badvel
(1995–2000), and Veerapalli (2000–2001). From 2001 to 2003, he pursued higher
studies in the United States, earning a master’s degree in pastoral care and
attending a theology course at Loyola University, Chicago, while offering
pastoral ministry at Saint Genevieve Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago.<o:p></o:p>

From 2004 to 2008, Cardinal Poola Anthony served as Director
of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. He also held several key
responsibilities in the Diocese of Cuddapah, including diocesan consultor,
Secretary for Education, Deputy Administrator of diocesan schools, and
coordinator of the Sponsorship Program.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Bishop of Kurnool on February 8, 2008, and
was consecrated on April 19, 2008. On November 19, 2020, Pope Francis appointed
him Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad. He was created and proclaimed
cardinal by Pope Francis during the Consistory held on August 27, 2022, and was
assigned the titular church of Ss. Protomartiri a Via Aurelia Antica.<o:p></o:p>

CBCI Announces Newly Constituted National Awards Honoring Exemplary Service to Church and Society

Bengaluru, 5 February 2026, CBCI: &nbsp;The 37th General Body Meeting of the Catholic
Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) witnessed a profound emphasis on unity,
mission, and the Church’s engagement with the nation, as Archbishop Andrews
Thazhath, CBCI President, was the main celebrant of the Holy Eucharist.<o:p></o:p>

In his homily, Archbishop Thazhath underlined that the unity
of the early Christian community was not merely organizational but deeply
Eucharistic. Sharing one faith, one hope, and one breaking of the bread, he
said, enabled believers to share their lives, resources, and mission, leading
naturally to common witness and common action. Drawing a parallel, he noted
that the Catholic Church in India - Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara - is
called to be “one heart and one soul,” adding that the CBCI is not just an
administrative body but a living symbol of Eucharistic communion where
diversity of rites enriches unity in Christ.<o:p></o:p>

Immediately after the Holy Mass, Archbishop Thazhath blessed
and inaugurated St. John’s Jubilee Park. All participants of the CBCI General
Body Meeting took part in the ceremony.<o:p></o:p>

The plenary sessions that followed addressed pressing
concerns of the Christian community in India. Mr. Shaji Joseph, journalist,
presented the ground reality faced by Christians, while Mr. Joel Singh spoke on
the all-India situation of Christians. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Mr. P. J.
Jose highlighted the challenges ahead. The session was moderated by Archbishop
John Moolachira.<o:p></o:p>

Reports were also presented by the National Vocation Service
Centre (NVSC), the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre
(NBCLC), the CBCI Office for Environment and Climate Change, and the Catholic
Council of India CCI, the pastoral council of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

In the afternoon, the bishops were divided into 12 groups
for in-depth discussions on various themes connected to the main theme of the
meeting, “Faith and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional
Vision.” The group discussions aimed at collective discernment and concrete
pastoral responses in the light of contemporary national realities.<o:p></o:p>

CBCI General Body Meeting Highlights Eucharistic Unity, National Concerns of Christians

The 37th General Body Meeting (GBM) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of
India (CBCI) was solemnly inaugurated on 4 February 2026 at St John’s National
Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, by His Grace Archbishop Leopoldo
Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. Held under the theme “Faith
and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,” the
gathering resonates deeply with the CBCI motto “United in Witness.”
Rooted in the Gospel and inspired by the love of Christ, the CBCI continues its
mission of strengthening faith, fostering unity among India’s diverse
communities, and promoting justice, peace, and harmony in society. More than
200 bishops from 174 dioceses across the country have assembled for prayer,
reflection, and deliberation on matters of national and ecclesial significance.<o:p></o:p></a>

The General Body
Meeting commenced at 9.00 a.m. with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration, during
which Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI, welcomed
the participants. The principal celebrant, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, in his
homily, called upon the bishops to be the light and salt of the earth, filled
with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He urged the shepherds of the Church to be
joyful, kind, faithful, and humble servants in the Lord’s mission, witnessing
Christ’s human love through outreach to the poor and the marginalized. The
Eucharist was concelebrated by senior Church leaders, including Archbishop Mar
Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI; Cardinal Filip Neri Ferrao President of
CCBI, His Beatitude Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar
Church; Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara
Church; Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop Emeritus of Bombay; Archbishop
George Antonysamy, Vice-President I; Archbishop Joseph Mar Thomas,
Vice-President II; and Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Secretary General

The inaugural
session began at 11.00 a.m. with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, invoking
God’s blessings on the deliberations. The Archbishop of Bangalore, host of the
meeting, welcomed the gathering and highlighted that the theme reflects the
Church’s deep commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Archbishop George Antonysamy read out the message of the Holy Father, Pope Leo
XIV. In his inaugural address, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli conveyed the
Apostolic Blessings of the Holy Father and observed that the ideals enshrined
in the Preamble of the Constitution of India resonate deeply with the Church’s
social teachings. He noted that even amid contemporary challenges, the Church
continues to serve the nation through humane development and by contributing to
the moral conscience of society, calling upon Church leaders to seek new
pathways to live and practice faith in harmony with constitutional values.<o:p></o:p>

Delivering the
Presidential Address, Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath stated that the Church
today stands at a critical juncture where conscience is tested and faith is
increasingly scrutinized in the public sphere. He described the theme as a
profound spiritual confession and public responsibility, calling the bishops to
be missionaries of hope and empowerment. Referring to emerging technologies,
particularly Artificial Intelligence, he emphasized the need to humanize
technology and ensure that the human person remains at the centre, urging the
Church to become “digital missionaries.” He further stressed the importance of
deepening the synodal journey, forming leaders for public life, and empowering
the laity, youth, and women.<o:p></o:p>

The Biennial Report
of the CBCI, covering the period from February 2024 to January 2026, was
presented by Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto. On the occasion, thirty-one newly
appointed bishops were felicitated by the Apostolic Nuncio with a shawl and
memento, followed by a solemn moment of silence in remembrance of the bishops
who had passed away. Messages from Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the
Dicastery for the Oriental Churches, and Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle,
Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, were read out. The session
concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Archbishop Joseph Mar Thomas,
Vice-President II of the CBCI, after which Rev Fr Jesudoss Rajamanickam,
Director of St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, outlined the

Conference of India (CBCI) will convene its 37th General Body Meeting from
February 4 to February 10, 2026, at St. John’s National Academy of Health
Sciences, Bengaluru. The biennial gathering will bring together Catholic
bishops and Church leaders from across the country to reflect on the Church’s
mission in contemporary India.<o:p></o:p>

The General Body Meeting will be held under the theme “Faith
and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,”
highlighting the Church’s commitment to constitutional values and
nation-building.<o:p></o:p>

The assembly will begin on Wednesday, February 4, with the
Inaugural Holy Eucharist at 9:00 a.m. at St. John’s Auditorium. His Excellency
Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, will be the
Chief Guest for the inaugural session.<o:p></o:p>

In keeping with the theme, the meeting will feature special
sessions on the current socio-political context and constitutional values, with
inputs from eminent legal and academic experts, including former Supreme Court

He was ordained a priest on May 5, 1977, for the Diocese of Mangalore. In the early years of his priestly ministry, he served as Assistant Parish Priest and Parish Priest in various parishes of the Diocese of Mangalore.</div><div> </div><div>Subsequently, Bishop Lobo was appointed Director of the “CODP” and later entrusted with the responsibility of Episcopal Vicar of Kasaragod in Kerala. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, a priest of the Diocese of Udupi, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi.</div><div> </div><div>Rev. D’Souza currently serves as the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva, Udupi. Born on August 19, 1962, in Uchila (Yermal), Udupi Taluk, Karnataka, he was ordained a priest on May 10, 1990.</div><div> </div><div>He completed his seminary formation at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore (1982–1985), and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome (1986–1990). He also holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Mysore and a Diploma in Depth Psychology and Formation from the Institute for Psychology and Formation, Bangalore. Furthering his academic pursuits, he earned a Licentiate in Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and completed his Ph.D. in Moral Theology at the same university between 1997 and 2003.</div><div> </div><div>Following his priestly ordination, Rev. Pope Leo XIV Appoints Rev. Leslie Clifford D’Souza as Bishop of Udupi

New Delhi, 25 January 2026, CBCI: Mar Dominic Kokkat,
C.S.T., the founding Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Gorakhpur in Uttar
Pradesh, passed away on Sunday, 25 January 2026. He was 93. Funeral
arrangements will be announced later.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 23 February 1932 at Vaikom in Kerala, he was
baptized as Joseph and joined the Little Flower Congregation (C.S.T.) in 1953,
taking the religious name Dominic. He received his major seminary formation and
theological studies at the Papal Seminary, Kandy (Sri Lanka), and in Pune, and
was ordained a priest on 4 October 1960.<o:p></o:p>

During his priestly ministry, Mar Dominic Kokkat served his
congregation in several key roles, including Vice Rector of the C.S.T.
Philosophical Seminary, Alwaye; Principal of the Technical School, Alwaye; and
Mission Superior of the C.S.T. Mission in Punjab. He also served as Assistant
Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), New Delhi, from
1978 to 1982. He held a Diploma in Social Work from the Coady International
Institute, Canada.<o:p></o:p>

On 4 October 1984, he was ordained the first Bishop of the
newly established Diocese of Gorakhpur and was formally installed on 14 October
1984. Known for his deep concern for the poor and the marginalized, he
initiated several pastoral and social apostolates in the diocese, enabling the
downtrodden and neglected to find dignity and a rightful place in society.<o:p></o:p>

Inspired by St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the charism
of his congregation, he founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of St.
Thérèse (LST) in 1988. After shepherding the Diocese of Gorakhpur with
dedication and zeal, he became Bishop Emeritus in 2006.<o:p></o:p>

formal complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Thrissur City, regarding a
serious case of cyber fraud and identity misuse.<o:p></o:p>

In his complaint, Archbishop Thazhath stated that unknown
individuals are fraudulently using his photograph while impersonating him under
different names and falsely claiming to hold senior positions such as Secretary
General or heads of offices associated with the CBCI. These impersonators have
reportedly been contacting priests, seminarians, religious, politicians, and
members of the general public.<o:p></o:p>

According to the complaint, the nature of these fraudulent
communications varies. In several instances, recipients were asked to share OTP
numbers received on their mobile phones. In other cases, they were invited to
join video conference links under the pretext of discussing CBCI-related
matters. There have also been reports of financial assistance being solicited
in the name of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

Archbishop Thazhath categorically clarified that neither he
nor his office, nor any authorised office of the CBCI, has initiated or
approved such calls, messages, video conference links, or requests for
financial assistance. He noted that these acts amount to deliberate
impersonation, deception, and potential cyber fraud, causing serious confusion,
reputational damage, and posing risks to the safety and trust of the public.<o:p></o:p>

He further informed the police that the frequency of such
incidents is increasing and has attached screenshots of calls received by his
acquaintances as evidence.<o:p></o:p>

Seeking urgent intervention, the CBCI President requested
the police to register the complaint, conduct a thorough investigation,
identify those responsible, and take appropriate legal action to prevent
further misuse of identity and protect the public from being deceived.<o:p></o:p>

New Delhi, 22 January 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly condemned the heinous attack on a Christian pastor in Odisha, describing the incident as a grave act of violence and humiliation that strikes at the core of human dignity and religious freedom.The CBCI expressed deep anguish over reports that the pastor was forcibly made to eat cow dung, calling it an inhuman act that not only degrades an individual but also targets his faith. Such acts, the bishops said, have no place in a civilized and democratic society.Demanding immediate and stringent action, the CBCI urged the authorities to identify and punish the perpetrators without delay and to ensure justice for the victim. The Conference affirmed its solidarity with the pastor and reiterated its commitment to standing with all victims of violence and discrimination.<o:p></o:p>Appealing for peace and harmony, the CBCI called upon citizens across the country to reject violence in all its forms and to work together to uphold mutual respect, fraternity, and the constitutional values of India.<o:p></o:p>&nbsp;
