CBCI deplores the attack on Venerable Statues in Agra

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India is deeply distressed to learn the sacrilegious acts of attack on the statues of Blessed Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus, venerated in the courtyard of St. Mary’s Church, Pratappura, Agra, in the early hours of today, by unknown fringe elements. The way the venerable statues were attacked and desecrated to bring maximum shame and disgrace on the venerable icons confirm that these were not just mere acts of vandalism, but well planned dastardly acts, aimed at deeply wounding the religious feelings and creating a feeling of insecurity among the minorities.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, while condemning such hideous acts, call upon the U.P. Government and the Central Government to take swift and appropriate action to book the culprits and to provide adequate security and protection to places of worship and objects of veneration. The sense of security of the minorities and the peace and harmony of all the citizens of India should not be allowed to be tampered upon by such fringe elements or insane minds.
