Cardinal Gracias inaugurates CCI meet on Vatican II
Varanasi: Cardinal Oswald Gracias inaugurated the 12th general body meeting of the Catholic Council of India (CCI) to discuss the Second Vatican Council.
“Second Vatican Council had a clear direction for the church in India. In the council, the church made a self reflection and decision to renew herself,” the cardinal who is the president of CCI, said.
The three-day meeting started at Nav sadhana Pastoral Centre in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Bishop Raphy Manjaly of Varanasi gave the welcome address.
The council members will deliberate on how far the renewal of the church, as envisaged by II Vatican Council, has taken place in India.
Specific themes such as Church’s concern for the poor, the role of the laity and dialogue with religions in the Indian context will also be discussed, the CCI said in a statement.
The council is considered the pastoral council of the Indian church and has representatives of bishops, priests, religious and laity as members.
The meeting will include a sharing of the live experiences of the people from different regions of India, as to how the council impacted their lives.
